landing on Mars

The spaceship Phoenix landed successfully on Mars yesterday. The spacecraft landed on the northern polar ice cap where it is hoped it will utilize its robotic arm to dig into the ice cap and retrieve ice, water, or even organic matter that may include proof of the existence of life.
It hasn't been that long ago since I was a kid, but I am really fascinated by this sort of exploration. According to the Science Channel, the organic life is the main thing that is being looked for now. It was proven back in 2004 that water once was abundant on Mars. Although the presence of water does make it likely that life could have existed on Mars, there was not enough information to find an outright assumption. That was the purpose of this mission. Assuming the solar panels open alright and the solar power cells function properly, we should know something for certain in a few months. Technorati Tags:, ,
